As I pause to reflect on the path that has led me to where I stand today, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the myriad experiences, challenges, and opportunities that have shaped my academic journey and personal development. This acknowledgment serves as a testament to the invaluable contributions of individuals, institutions, and circumstances that have guided and supported me throughout my time with Ang Silakbo. The tapestry of experiences woven throughout this journey has created a rich foundation upon which I continue to build, each thread representing a lesson learned, a relationship formed, or a challenge overcome.

The road has not always been straightforward, yet each detour and obstacle has ultimately contributed to a richer, more meaningful experience. I have come to appreciate that success is rarely a solitary achievement but rather the culmination of collaborative efforts, mentorship, and the generous support of those who believe in our potential. Through moments of triumph and periods of uncertainty, the constant has been the unwavering support of a community that values growth, creativity, and authentic expression.

My Personal Journey with Ang Silakbo

Looking back at my time with Ang Silakbo fills me with nostalgia and gratitude (LOL last year pa sha but HAHAHAHHA ayaw na lang ijudge). What began as an opportunity to hone my broadcasting skills evolved into a transformative experience that shaped both my abilities and personal connections. The journey, with its unexpected turns and serendipitous encounters, has been instrumental in defining not only my professional trajectory but also my understanding of community, purpose, and personal excellence. Each chapter of this story has contributed to a narrative far richer than I could have anticipated when I first embarked on this path.

The Time I Joined As A Broadcaster

I was a broadcaster at that time, and I knew it would be a great opportunity to hone my skills. When I got accepted into Ang Silakbo, it felt like a door opening to new possibilities. I remember the excitement and nervousness I felt, knowing this was my chance to grow. The initial days were filled with a mixture of anticipation and uncertainty as I navigated unfamiliar territory, learning the rhythms and expectations of this new environment. Despite the challenges of adapting to new responsibilities and relationships, there was an underlying sense of purpose that propelled me forward, a conviction that this path, however uncertain, was aligned with my aspirations and values.

First Silak-View Experience

My first Silak-View was both challenging and exhilarating, I was with Kharl Jones Almacin at that time with Eirene Bardago as the video journalist and Jolisa Marie Yabillo as our video editor. I remembered we interviewed Rhoda Amistad that time who eventually became a broadcaster (kahinumdom pa ko ani kadtong gipost kaduha among silakview kay naay nasulti si Rhoda nga wa nako ka trace), too. I put all my effort into making it a success, learning so much about broadcasting techniques, audience engagement, and teamwork in the process. This experience confirmed that I had made the right decision in joining Ang Silakbo. The preparation was intense, requiring hours of research, script development, and rehearsal. There were moments of doubt and frustration, times when the task seemed overwhelming, but the collaborative spirit of the team and the guidance of experienced mentors provided the support needed to persevere. The day of the broadcast brought a surge of adrenaline, a test of all we had prepared, and ultimately, a profound sense of accomplishment that transcended the technical success of the program.

Division Schools Press Conference

A few weeks later, I got in for the Division Schools Press Conference. We practiced and practiced tirelessly, refining our skills and preparing for the competition. I will never forget these names; Joemelle Surilla, Rachel Ochea, Jan Ivan Alolod, Yaneca Marie Arong, Samantha Verdun, and Jolisa Maria Yabillo. During this time, I made many friends in the English broadcasting team. The bonds we formed through shared challenges and late-night practice sessions became one of the most valuable aspects of this experience. The intensity of preparation created a unique camaraderie, a shared understanding that could only come from navigating the pressures and aspirations together. We critiqued each other's work, celebrated improvements, and supported one another through moments of self-doubt. The competition itself, while important, became secondary to the growth and relationships that emerged from the process.

"Even if we lost the competition, I have my friends which is more precious than any merits I could receive. The connections we forged in those challenging moments have proven more enduring and meaningful than any accolade could ever be."

The Idea

When I first joined the team, I applied and then received an email confirmation. I doubted that it was automated—it was actually manually sent. Seeing an opportunity for improvement, I approached Ms. Queenie to propose that I could create a website for seamless operations. We agreed this would be beneficial for everyone. This moment represented a pivotal shift in my journey, a transition from simply participating in existing structures to actively contributing to their evolution. The idea emerged from a genuine desire to address a practical challenge, but it ultimately opened a door to a new dimension of my involvement with Ang Silakbo, one that would draw on different skills and offer new avenues for impact.

I remember sitting down with Ms. Queenie, nervously explaining my idea. Her enthusiasm and support gave me the confidence to pursue this project, showing me that good ideas are valued here. The conversation was a lesson in the power of initiative and the importance of environments that nurture innovation. What could have been dismissed as unnecessary or ambitious was instead recognized for its potential value, a testament to the culture of growth and improvement that permeates Ang Silakbo. This early vote of confidence became a foundation for the work that followed, a reminder that meaningful change often begins with a simple observation and the courage to suggest a better way.

Promotion

In the middle of the website development, I was promoted from broadcaster to production team head. I was happy about this recognition of my work, but also felt a bit sad for someone who had been demoted. This taught me an important lesson about leadership and the complexities of organizational changes. The promotion brought new responsibilities and challenges, requiring a shift in perspective from individual contributor to team leader. It demanded a balance between driving the project forward and supporting the needs and growth of team members. The mixed emotions I experienced—pride in the recognition yet empathy for a colleague's disappointment—highlighted the human dimension of organizational decisions, a complexity that textbooks and training programs often fail to capture adequately.

Expansion

What started as a simple tool for automated email sharing grew into something much more comprehensive. The development process was exciting as the website expanded and expanded until it became a full-stack web application that everyone loved. What began as a simple automation tool evolved to include articles, community features similar to social networks, and much more. It transformed from a dedicated automated email sharing system into a multifunctional web application capable of handling virtually anything. This evolution was not planned from the outset but emerged organically through continuous feedback, observation of needs, and a willingness to experiment and iterate. Each new feature or improvement was a response to a real challenge or opportunity, grounded in the actual experiences and requirements of the community it served.

"Seeing everyone use and appreciate something I created was one of the most rewarding experiences of my journey. There is a unique satisfaction in witnessing your work make a tangible difference in the lives of others, in knowing that your efforts have contributed to a more efficient, connected, and vibrant community."

My Gratitude to Ang Silakbo

Words cannot fully express my profound gratitude to Ang Silakbo for the transformative opportunities and experiences that have shaped my journey. This organization has been more than just a platform—it has been a nurturing ground for growth, creativity, and personal development. The culture of excellence, combined with a genuine commitment to the development of each member, creates an environment where potential can be realized and talents can flourish. The impact of this experience extends far beyond the specific skills acquired or projects completed; it has influenced my approach to challenges, my understanding of collaboration, and my vision for what is possible when passionate individuals unite around a shared purpose.

Opportunities That Shaped Me

I am forever thankful for the countless opportunities Ang Silakbo has provided—from challenging projects that pushed my boundaries to collaborative initiatives that expanded my perspective. Each opportunity has been a stepping stone toward becoming the person I am today, equipping me with skills and experiences that transcend conventional learning. The diversity of these opportunities—spanning broadcasting, technology development, leadership, and community building—has contributed to a well-rounded development that would have been difficult to achieve in more narrowly focused environments. What makes these opportunities particularly valuable is not just their variety but the supportive context in which they were offered, a setting where experimentation was encouraged, mistakes were viewed as learning opportunities, and growth was celebrated at every stage.

Invaluable Lessons

The lessons I've learned through Ang Silakbo extend far beyond technical knowledge. I've learned about resilience in the face of challenges, the power of collaborative creativity, the importance of authentic expression, and the impact of purposeful work. These lessons have become the foundation upon which I continue to build my identity. Perhaps most significantly, I've learned that excellence is not a destination but a continuous journey, a commitment to improvement that is never complete. The pursuit of quality in our work, integrity in our relationships, and authenticity in our expression is not a finite task but an ongoing practice, one that requires consistent attention and intentional effort. This understanding has influenced not only my approach to specific projects but my broader philosophy of personal and professional development.

Moments of Shared Laughter

Some of my most cherished memories are the moments of laughter shared with my advisers and peers at Ang Silakbo. From impromptu celebrations of small victories to humorous mishaps during intense projects, these moments of joy created bonds that transformed colleagues into friends and mentors into trusted guides. The laughter we shared lightened our burdens and reminded us of the human connection that underlies all meaningful work. These moments, often unplanned and seemingly insignificant at the time, have proven to be among the most enduring aspects of this experience. They remind us that amidst deadlines, challenges, and aspirations, it is the quality of our relationships and the joy we find in our shared endeavors that ultimately give meaning to our work and sustain us through difficulties.

My Esteemed Advisers

I am profoundly grateful for the guidance, wisdom, and unwavering support of my distinguished advisers. Their mentorship has been instrumental in shaping my academic journey. Beyond their formal roles and responsibilities, these individuals have demonstrated a genuine commitment to my growth and development, investing time, energy, and care in ways that transcend professional obligation. Their influence extends beyond specific skills or knowledge; they have modeled values, approaches, and perspectives that continue to inform my decisions and aspirations. The unique combination of their diverse strengths and styles has provided a rich, multifaceted foundation for my development, offering different lenses through which to view challenges and opportunities.

Ms. Queenie Paquibot

Her exceptional guidance and visionary approach have challenged me to expand my horizons and pursue excellence in all endeavors. Her belief in my abilities has been a constant source of motivation and confidence. I treasure our conversations filled with wisdom and the moments of laughter that made even the most challenging tasks enjoyable. Her support to my ideas showed her commitment to innovation and student growth. What distinguishes her mentorship is the perfect balance she maintains between high expectations and supportive encouragement, pushing me to reach beyond what I thought possible while providing the guidance and reassurance needed to navigate unfamiliar territory. Her ability to see potential where others might not and her willingness to advocate for innovative ideas have been particularly influential in my development, teaching me the value of vision and the courage required to pursue new paths.

Ms. June Marie Basilgo

Her meticulous attention to detail and comprehensive knowledge have significantly enhanced the quality of my work. Her patience, encouragement, and constructive feedback have been invaluable to my growth and development. I'll never forget her witty remarks that would brighten our meetings and her ability to find humor in stressful situations. Her approach to mentorship emphasizes the importance of thoroughness and precision, demonstrating that excellence often resides in the details that others might overlook. At the same time, her warmth and humor create an environment where rigorous standards feel supportive rather than intimidating, where the pursuit of quality becomes a shared journey rather than an imposed requirement. This combination of high standards and genuine care has shaped not only my work but my understanding of how to guide and support others effectively.

Ms. Diana Alba

Her innovative thinking and practical insights have provided me with a well-rounded perspective. Her mentorship has taught me to approach challenges with creativity and resilience, skills that will continue to serve me throughout my academic career. The joyful atmosphere she created during our collaborations made learning an exciting adventure rather than a task. Her ability to transform potentially mundane activities into engaging experiences demonstrates the power of enthusiasm and creativity in educational settings. What I particularly value about her guidance is the emphasis on finding joy in the process, not just satisfaction in the outcome. This perspective has been a valuable counterbalance to achievement-oriented pressures, reminding me that meaningful learning and growth often occur in the moments of curiosity, exploration, and even playfulness that characterize the journey toward a goal.

"The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires. In each of my advisers, I have been fortunate to experience this highest form of teaching—the kind that ignites passion, nurtures potential, and illuminates possibilities that might otherwise remain undiscovered."

Key Milestones

The Beginning

Looking back at the initial steps of my journey with Ang Silakbo, I recognize how pivotal those early experiences were in shaping my approach to challenges and opportunities. The foundation laid during this period continues to inform my decisions and methodologies today. Those first tentative steps, marked by a mixture of enthusiasm and uncertainty, established patterns of engagement and learning that would characterize the entire journey. The openness to new experiences, the willingness to venture beyond comfort zones, and the commitment to growth that defined those early days became enduring qualities that have served me well in various contexts. What seemed at the time like simple participation in activities or completion of tasks was, in retrospect, the beginning of a transformative process, the first brushstrokes on a canvas that would eventually become a rich and detailed portrait of personal and professional development.

Growth and Development

Each project, each role, and each team I've had the privilege to be part of has contributed significantly to my growth. The skills acquired, the relationships formed, and the lessons learned have been instrumental in my development. This growth has not been linear or predictable but has unfolded through a series of challenges, opportunities, and reflections, each building upon the last in ways that were not always immediately apparent. Technical skills have been enhanced through practical application and feedback; interpersonal abilities have developed through collaboration and leadership experiences; and personal qualities like resilience, adaptability, and self-awareness have been strengthened through the navigation of various challenges and transitions. The cumulative effect of these experiences has been a holistic development that encompasses not only what I can do but who I am becoming.

Overcoming Challenges

The obstacles and setbacks encountered along the way, while difficult at the time, have proven to be invaluable learning experiences. They have fostered resilience, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of my capabilities and limitations. Each challenge, whether technical, interpersonal, or personal, has served as a catalyst for growth, forcing me to develop new skills, reconsider assumptions, and discover resources I didn't know I possessed. The process of working through difficulties—of persisting when the path forward wasn't clear, of seeking help when needed, of adjusting approaches in response to feedback—has been as educational as any formal instruction. These experiences have cultivated not only specific problem-solving abilities but also a general confidence in my capacity to navigate uncertainty and overcome obstacles, a belief that has become an essential foundation for continued growth and achievement.

Present Achievements

Today's accomplishments are the result of yesterday's efforts and the collective support of countless individuals who have contributed their expertise, guidance, and encouragement along the way. The projects completed, skills mastered, and recognition received reflect not only personal dedication but also the investment of mentors, the collaboration of peers, and the opportunities provided by Ang Silakbo. These achievements, while gratifying, are valued not primarily as endpoints but as indicators of growth and contributions to a community that has given so much. They represent milestones in an ongoing journey, markers of progress that provide satisfaction while simultaneously pointing toward future possibilities. In acknowledging these accomplishments, I am mindful of their collaborative nature and the responsibility they entail—to continue developing the talents they represent and to use them in service of goals that extend beyond personal advancement.

Special Acknowledgment

I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to my advisers—Ms. Queenie Paquibot, Ms. June Marie Basilgo, and Ms. Diana Alba—whose exceptional guidance, unwavering support, and profound wisdom have been the cornerstone of my academic development. Their mentorship has transcended conventional academic advising; they have been role models, advocates, and sources of inspiration throughout this journey. Each has contributed unique perspectives, strengths, and approaches that together have provided a comprehensive foundation for my growth. Their willingness to invest in my development—to share knowledge, provide opportunities, offer feedback, and believe in my potential—has made an immeasurable difference in my experience with Ang Silakbo and my broader educational journey. The impact of their guidance extends far beyond specific projects or skills; it has influenced my understanding of excellence, my approach to challenges, and my vision of what is possible.

The laughter we've shared during our meetings, the inside jokes that developed over time, and the light-hearted moments amidst serious work have made this journey not just educational but truly enjoyable. These moments of connection have taught me that growth flourishes in an environment where joy and learning coexist. The balance they have modeled—between rigor and enjoyment, between high expectations and genuine care, between professional guidance and personal connection—has demonstrated that meaningful development encompasses both achievement and well-being. This holistic approach to mentorship has not only enhanced my experience but has also shaped my understanding of how to support others in their growth, a lesson that will inform my own leadership and mentoring efforts in the future.

Expressions of Gratitude

Mentors and Leaders

To the mentors who have generously shared their wisdom, experience, and time—your guidance has been invaluable. Your willingness to invest in my growth, to challenge my thinking, and to provide constructive feedback has profoundly shaped my development. Your example has not only influenced my approach to work but has also inspired me to pay forward the gift of mentorship to others in their journeys. The impact of your guidance extends beyond specific skills or knowledge; it has influenced my understanding of excellence, my approach to challenges, and my vision of what is possible. The diverse perspectives and approaches you have shared have provided a rich, multifaceted foundation for my growth, offering different lenses through which to view opportunities and challenges. Your belief in my potential, often exceeding my own, has been a powerful motivator and a source of confidence during periods of uncertainty or self-doubt.

Colleagues and Collaborators

To the colleagues who have become trusted collaborators and friends—your support, camaraderie, and collaborative spirit have made the challenges more manageable and the successes more meaningful. The synergy of our collective efforts, the diversity of our perspectives, and the strength of our shared commitment have enabled achievements that would have been impossible individually. I am grateful for the privilege of working alongside such talented, dedicated, and inspiring fellow students. The relationships formed through our shared experiences—the late nights working on projects, the brainstorming sessions that sparked new ideas, the mutual support during stressful periods, and the celebrations of collective achievements—have been among the most valuable aspects of this journey. These connections have not only enhanced the quality of our work but have also created a community of support and belonging that has enriched the entire experience.

Ang Silakbo

To Ang Silakbo—thank you for being the canvas upon which I could paint my aspirations, the stage where I could perform and grow, and the community that nurtured my talents. The opportunities you provided, the lessons you taught, and the memories we created together have become an integral part of who I am today. Your impact extends far beyond academic development; you have helped shape my character, values, and vision for the future. The culture you foster—one that values excellence, encourages innovation, supports growth, and celebrates achievements—creates an environment where potential can be realized and talents can flourish. The combination of high standards and supportive guidance, of challenging opportunities and necessary resources, of individual recognition and collective purpose, creates a unique context for development that balances aspiration with support. The experiences gained and relationships formed within this community will continue to influence my path long after this specific chapter has concluded.

Lessons Learned

The journey has taught me that success is not merely measured by achievements or accolades, but by the impact we have on others, the integrity with which we conduct ourselves, and the legacy we create through our work and relationships. It has reinforced the value of continuous learning, adaptability, and resilience in navigating the ever-evolving landscape. This perspective shifts the focus from external validation to intrinsic purpose, from temporary recognition to lasting contribution. It acknowledges that while achievements are important markers of progress, they are meaningful primarily as expressions of values and vehicles for impact. This understanding has influenced not only how I evaluate my own efforts but also how I recognize and celebrate the contributions of others, looking beyond visible accomplishments to appreciate the character, commitment, and care that underlie them.

I have learned that true fulfillment comes from alignment between our work and our values, from contributing to something larger than ourselves, and from the relationships we build along the way. The challenges encountered have taught me the importance of perseverance, the power of a positive mindset, and the necessity of self-care in sustaining long-term success. This insight highlights the interconnection between personal satisfaction and broader purpose, between individual well-being and collective contribution. It suggests that meaningful work is not defined solely by its content or outcomes but by its resonance with our core values and its connection to communities or causes that matter to us. The relationships formed through shared endeavors—the collaborations, mentorships, and friendships that develop in the context of purposeful work—are not incidental benefits but essential elements of a fulfilling experience, sources of support, growth, and joy that enrich both the process and the outcome.

Perhaps most importantly, this journey has taught me the significance of gratitude—of recognizing and acknowledging the contributions of others to our success, of appreciating the opportunities afforded to us, and of finding value in every experience, whether perceived as positive or negative at the time. Gratitude shifts our focus from what is lacking to what is present, from what we desire to what we have received, from entitlement to appreciation. It reminds us that our achievements are rarely solely our own but are built upon the support, guidance, and opportunities provided by others. This perspective fosters humility, strengthens relationships, and enhances well-being by connecting us to the abundance that exists even amidst challenges. The practice of gratitude—of consciously recognizing and expressing appreciation for the people, experiences, and resources that contribute to our journey—is not merely a social courtesy but a transformative habit that enriches our experience and deepens our impact.

"Gratitude turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity... it makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. The simple act of acknowledging the good in our lives—the support we've received, the opportunities we've been given, the lessons we've learned—transforms not only our perspective but our experience, revealing abundance where we might otherwise see scarcity and possibility where we might otherwise see limitation."

— Melody Beattie

Looking Forward

As I look to the future, I do so with optimism, determination, and a deep sense of gratitude for the journey thus far. I am committed to continuing my growth, to contributing meaningfully to my field, and to supporting others in their development as so many have supported me. The path ahead, while not fully visible or predictable, is illuminated by the lessons, values, and relationships that have shaped my experience with Ang Silakbo. The skills acquired, the perspectives gained, and the connections formed during this chapter will serve as valuable resources as I navigate new challenges and opportunities. While specific goals and circumstances will evolve, the foundation established through this experience—a commitment to excellence, a value for collaboration, an appreciation for mentorship, and a belief in the power of purposeful work—will continue to guide my decisions and actions.

I approach the opportunities and challenges ahead with humility, knowing that there is always more to learn, and with confidence, knowing that I carry with me the lessons, skills, and support that have been so generously shared with me throughout this journey. This balance—between recognizing how much remains to be discovered and appreciating how much has already been gained—creates a stance that is both open to growth and grounded in capability. It acknowledges that while the path forward will include uncertainties and difficulties, it also holds possibilities for contribution, connection, and fulfillment that build upon all that has come before. In this spirit, I move forward not with a sense of completion but with an awareness of continuation, carrying forward the values, lessons, and relationships of this chapter into the unfolding story that lies ahead.

Sincerely,
Ron Asnahon
